White Flag is an encaustic painting by the American artist Jasper d in , soon after his first flag painting, entitled simply Flag, it was the first painting by Johns to be acquired by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, bought from the artist in The price was undisclosed but experts estimated its value at the time as more than $20 million. A number of the same sculptures were re-presented at MOMA. “Jasper Johns Flags ” appeared at the Anthony d’Offay Gallery, London, in June The MOMA retrospective, organized by Kirk Varnedoe, presented a comprehensive overview of Johns’s artistic career via works occupying two floors of the museum.

Johns would go on to paint or draw more than three dozen flags. White Flag, painted in the summer of and now in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, is larger, ten feet by six and a half, and the flag pattern remains perceptible beneath its whited-out surface thanks to the collaged papers and a subtle use of charcoal. The matter of meaning, for painter and viewer alike, is crucial to this book, a deeply felt and richly considered attempt to come to terms with one of the most challenging artists of our day. An illuminating look at an enigmatic painter, Figuring Jasper Johns also provides a way of approaching American art of the s and s.

Flag, by Jasper Johns Johns has said that the idea to paint this first American flag came to him in a dream. Although he began the work using enamel house paint, he soon turned to his variant of the ancient medium of encaustic wherein wax, not oil, binds pigment.

The Flag: Johns’ first use of the flag motif was the result of a dream the artist had in when he was 24 years old. Flag was exhibited in Johns’ first one-man show at Leo Castelli’s gallery in and is now located at MoMA in New York.
