Ege’s book is the standard account, and it’s very well researched (Ege even visited the supposed site of the massacre with a metal detector and turned up shell casings, etc.). Possibly the most impassioned book about this event is "Death, Too,for the Heavy Runner," by Ben Bennett ().

At the same time, it is carefully researched, helped by the Montana Historical Society and published by Mountain Press. It was not read across the country but sometimes turns up on the : Mary Strachan Scriver. One of the quickest and most appealing things to read is Ben Bennett’s version, “Death, too, for the Heavy Runner.” It's a fiction version of events.

Bennett was a history prof in SF and is gone now. These accounts are laden with mythology, romanticism, bitterness, truth, and outrage.
